Own your AI or use a cloud AI API: a fair comparison
This page compares owning your AI on your own GPU server with calling a typical cloud AI API. It covers where models run, where your data goes, how you pay, which models you can use and who approves actions. Neither suits everyone: a cloud API is quick to start, while owning gives you control and a fixed cost.
We'll walk you through it on sample data.
- Own it: site licence, one-time (₹35 L platform-only), ex-GST
- ₹50–90 L
- Managed service a year; hardware at cost, ex-GST
- ₹16–18 L
- Paid pilot on your own documents, credited against the licence
- 4–6 weeks
- Subscribe: per 1M input / output tokens; not yet on sale
- ₹8 / ₹28

When a cloud AI API is the better choice
- Your volume is low, or you are still experimenting.
- You need a specific hosted frontier model.
- Your data carries no restriction on leaving your building.
- You have no budget for hardware or a licence this year.
When owning your SI is the better choice
- Your documents may not leave your building, or a buyer asks each model's origin.
- Usage is steady and high, so metered bills keep growing.
- Consequential actions must wait for a named approver.
- You want a fixed yearly cost you can budget.
How the cost compares over time
A cloud AI API is metered, so cost rises with every user and query. Owning your SI costs a one-time site licence of ₹50–90 L (₹35 L platform-only) plus ₹16–18 L a year, with hardware at cost, so the cost per query falls as use grows. Where the lines cross depends on your volume and model choice; we work it out with you on a scoping call. All prices ex-GST.

FAQ
Is it cheaper to own AI than to use a cloud AI API?
It depends on your volume. A cloud AI API is metered, so cost grows with use. Owning your SI costs a one-time licence of ₹50–90 L plus ₹16–18 L a year, with hardware at cost, so the cost per query falls as use grows. We work out your case on a scoping call.
Is a cloud AI API less secure than owning AI?
Not by default; it depends on the vendor's terms and your rules. The real difference is where your data goes. With a cloud AI API, prompts and documents travel to the vendor's servers. When you own your SI, they stay on your server, and with Agent OS outbound calls are blocked by default. Choose by what your data rules allow.
Can open-weight AI models match a cloud AI API?
For many document tasks, open-weight models do the job well, but hosted frontier models may do better on some tasks. The fair test is your own files. In a 4–6 week paid pilot, BiltIQ runs open-weight models on your past documents and reports caught, missed and time per file against your manual results, before you buy anything.
Can we use owned AI and a cloud AI API together?
Yes, where your rules allow it. Agent OS blocks outbound calls by default. In on-prem-required mode, no outbound host can be allowed at all. In other modes, an admin can allow listed hosts, such as a specific cloud AI API, and BiltIQ shows you the list. Sensitive work stays on your server either way.
How long does it take to own your AI?
Start with a scoping call, then a paid pilot of 4–6 weeks on your own documents, credited against the licence. If you go ahead, BiltIQ commissions your SI server on site; hardware lead time varies with the market. A cloud AI API is faster to start, which is one of its real advantages.
